Workshops

May 4 - 8  Nocturne, the Enchantment of the Night.  Five-day workshop with nationally know instructor, Kenn Backhaus

For decades artists have been enthralled by the effects of the evening light upon the landscape.  Kenn has always stated that, “everything under the sun and moon is fair game”.  The moonlight will be the inspiration for this five-day workshop.  He will share his process of developing the nocturne painting through lecture and demonstration both in the field and the studio to capture the effects of the evening light.

Nights will be spent painting nocturnal studies plein air.  While out on location, students will use artificial lighting to illuminate both their painting surface and palette.  During the day, additional instruction will be given indoors in a studio setting. At that time, Kenn will explain the process of using the newly created field studies to achieve a finished nocturne painting.

Since color usually becomes a minimal consideration in a nocturne, the explanation of the importance of developing a strong design pattern within the composition is critical.  This nocturne workshop has been scheduled during a full moon phase to take advantage of the moon’s effect on the evening landscape, weather permitting. The importance of adhering to the sound historic principals and foundations of art will be applied throughout the workshop.

In addition to the above instruction, Kenn will explain the use of basic fundamentals that can derive from acquired knowledge that is fostered in the field, along with one’s experiences and adopting a conceptualized process to translate any given daylight reference into a successful nocturne.

Skill Level: This workshop is appropriate for intermediate and advance level painters.

Medium: The workshop will be instructed in Oil. Other mediums acceptable are Watercolor / Acrylic / Pastel

Cost:  $695.  A deposit of $350 is due to hold a place in class.  The remaining $345 will be due by March 1st.
